The University of Portsmouth is a leading modern university with a strong reputation for teaching and research. Many of our academics are international leaders in their fields and our students learn from experts who are pushing forward the boundaries of knowledge.

Our 19,000 students, including 3,000 from over 100 countries, are supported by over 3,000 staff. We offer superb facilities in a vibrant waterfront location – a university by the sea but in the heart of one of Britain’s most historic cities. The main Guildhall campus, dotted around the city centre, has undergone extensive redevelopment with the establishment of a University Quarter.

The University of Portsmouth is a research-active university with wide range of activities across many subjects. Areas of international excellence include the Institute of Biomedicaland Biomolecular Sciences, the Centre for European and International Research and the Institute of Cosmolog yand Gravitation. We also have well-developed strengths in applied research with business, industry, and the public and voluntary sectors.

We are proud of our teaching record, receiving the highest possible rating in the most recent Quality Assurance Agency audit.  The 2011 National Students Survey placesPortsmouthwithin the top 30 mainstream English universities for overall satisfaction with 85 per cent of full-time students reporting being satisfied or very satisfied with their course, higher than the national average of 83 per cent.

Professional Learning Facilities

v  In 2011 we opened the new £9mDentalAcademy. An innovative partnership between theUniversityofPortsmouthand King’s College London Dental Institute, theDentalAcademyis the largest dental academic centre in theUKand is the first of its kind in the country offering integrated team-based training programmes for dentists and dental care professionals.

v  Building work has started on a new wing on theEldonBuildingto include an exhibition space, artists’ studios and a 250-seat professional theatre and film screening facility open to the community.

v  Plans are also underway for a new building in the city centre with 598 student bedrooms and approx 4,500sq/m of teaching space.

v  A rebuilt £1.1m nursery for the children of students and staff opened in 2010.

v  We opened theUK’s first dedicated brain tumour research centre in December 2010.

v DenisSciamaBuilding, the £9m home for our internationally recognisedInstituteofCosmologyand Gravitation opened in 2009.

v  A new Centre for Counter Fraud Studies opened recently within theInstituteofCriminal Justice Studiesand a new ‘mock courtroom’ was launched by theSchoolofLawwhere students can take part in mock-trials.

v  A fully stocked model pharmacy was opened recently to help equip students in theSchoolofPharmacyand Biomedical Sciences with the skills they need to become pharmacists while journalism students can take advantage of a state-of-the art newsroom.

v  ‘Space’ – the University’s gallery and exhibition area – is going from strength to strength, attracting visiting artists and displaying a year round programme showcasing the work of students, staff and alumni

v  A prestigious Centre for Molecular Design was re-launched in 2008. The Centre will undertake new work which includes designing cutting-edge molecular modelling software for pharmaceutical companies to help develop new drugs.

v  The £11 million green Library complex, integrated into its 1970s predecessor, has won a host of awards, the latest being the 2010 Solent Design Awards and People’s Choice awards for best building. It is recognised among architects for its green credentials and among students for its wireless and digital technologies

v  Renovations to the £6.5 million Student Centre include Third Space, a study and relaxation area where students can collaborate in inflatable study pods or watch giant wall-mounted television screens while relaxing on huge pink sofas.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Other facilities include:

The £4.5 million ExPERT Centre containing a fully-kitted out operating theatre and hospital ward, home to our computerised mannequins which breathe oxygen, drool, secrete fluids, blink, bleed, and even react to drugs injected into their bodies. The facility trains students in the biomedical sciences and healthcare professions.

A purpose-built £2.5 million sports science building houses first class laboratories, a swimming flume and two British Olympic Medical Centre-accredited climatic chambers.

The eco-friendlyPortlandBuilding, with its solar panels and the £12 million Library extension, opened in January 2007 by crime author PD James.

The University’s progressive approach to computing technology has resulted in an almost entirely wireless campus allowing thousands of students and staff to enjoy the benefits and freedom of wireless mobile computing. All rooms in halls of residence have high-speed broadband (10Mbps) which is totally free.
